MARTINA FRANCA DONKEY

In the territory of Martina Franca there is a famous breed of donkeys, that the experts consider of great value. Martina donkeys derive from catalan donkeys, brought to Puglia at the time of the Italian rule. This donkey is also called morello, because it has a dark coat, while its mouth and inside the legs it is grey. Martina donkey is tall and well built and it has good nerves. In the Murgia of trulli, that spreads out among the provinces of Bari, Brindisi and Taranto, there is a breed of horses, carefully selected, called Murgese horses.
The origins of this horses date back to the XV and XIX century and they have Spanish, Napolitan, Berber and Arab ancestors. The Murgese horses have a blackish, irony grey or very dark brown coat and they have great rusticity and a powerful fine appearance, because they are grown in a wild state in the ranges. These horses, that belong to the big Napolitan thoroughbred, were the gem of the Dukes of Martina and they were exported all over the world. The Murgese horse has a well-balanced nature and it is suitable for both beginners and experts in horse riding.
