San Domenico
Church |

|
S.Domenico church is a peculiar sacred site
that was built between 1746 and 1750 over a pre-existing romanic
construction (consecrated to S.Pietro). Its project was made by
the Dominican Friar Cantalupi.
The church is in a smart baroque style, its façade is divided
into two different orders, with double pilasters, and the
capitals are embellished by caryatids with nymphs shape. |

|
On the façade, orned with classical Baroque
torches, there also is the Dominican coat of arms, framed by a
wonderful high-relief with angel figures. Over the wide portal
there is a beautiful single lancet window with a frame, on which
there are valuable leaves, volutes and curls decorations. |
|
Inside, there is only one nave and some
precious altars made of polychrome marble:
- Altar on which there is a painting by the famous painter
Nicola Gliri, commissioned by the Blasi family;
- Altar consecrated to the Rosary Congregation, with a painting
of “The Virgin that unrolls a painting of San Domenico” (1681,
painted by Gliri); |
 |
|
- Altar in a smart rococò style, with a
valuable painting of the “Madonna del Rosario between San
Domenico and S.Caterina da Siena” (1762, work by Domenico
Carella);
- Altar consecrated to San Vincenzo Ferreri (he is famous
because he converted many heretics), with a lovely painting of
1777, attributed to De Mauro;
- Altar on which there is a beautiful painting by Gliri (1676) “
Presentation of Jesus to the Temple”.
Very important is also the Crucifix, object loved by the
Dominicans, and the main altar, made by some napolitan marble
masters and commissioned by Father Giacomo Tursi. In ancient
times, there was (in the niche) a paiting of the “Rosary
Nativity” made by Nicola Gliri for the Friar Antonio Desiati. |
