LENT TIME

The passage from Carnival to Lent was marked by the tolling of San Martino bell, that around eleven p.m. on Shrove Tuesday informed the people that in one hour the prohibitive time would have started. This was a moment of transition, people passed from the last day of Carnival nosh-up to the first day of Lent fasting.n that period the Church forbade people meat and any other food by-product, like: eggs, cheese, milk, ricotta cheese.
On Ash Wednesday morning, after the church, women used to go home to “a ascequà a ieratta ches”. They passed a grater on the fire to destroy every remaining of cheese that could be mixed to the bread. This one, had to be grated to make “a sagne pa seratezz”.

The ones who had money, used to pay a tax to the Church and were allowed to eat pasta with cheese, while sick people could eat meat only if they had a health certificate.
