The Origins Museums |

ALBEROBELLO
Our itinerary to visit the most important ethnographic sites of
Puglia starts from Alberobello, the capital of trulli . These
are characterisitc stone houses with a cone shape and their
origins are written on the display panels inside the
“Territory Museum”. |
 |
|
This structure is in the middle of a
picturesque group of trulli and it houses some particular
exhibitions like: the population religiousness, handcraft (carpets
and clothes), the material culture and the architecture of the
“pietra a secco” technique.

ALTAMURA
From Alberobello, we move to Altamura to visit the
Ethnographic Museum of the Alta Murgia,in which there
are: ancient weaving tools, some other tools used by
farmers and the traditional costumes of Puglia and
Altamura.

CRISPIANO
An interesting Museum of Peasant Culture is the one of
Crispiano, a town in the province of Taranto. This museum is
settled in the beautiful sixteenth century Masseria Lupoli.
This complex is always visited by many people and it houses the
first mechanical agricolutural machines. |

CERIGNOLA
Another interesting museum is the Corn Museum of
Cerignola, in the province of Foggia. Here you can have a look
at the tools once used by local farmers to reap and process the
corn, among which there also are some big millstones. |

MONTE SANT'ANGELO
Our itinerary goes on toward Monte S.Angelo, on the
Gargano area, where you can visit the Popular Arts and
Traditions Museum “Giovanni Tancredi”.
This museum was founded in 1925 by Giovanni Tancredi, an
ethnologist. It is very ancient and it is settled in
S.Francesco convent. There, you can see tools and utensils
to work in the fields or for handcraft works; but you can
also see costumes, old furniture and sacred objects
consecrated to S.Michele Arcangelo. |

MARGHERITA DI SAVOIA
IIn Puglia you can also visit an Historic Saltworks Museum.
It is in Margherita di Savoia.Inside, there are display panels
about the salt digging technique from the sea and you can see
some working tools. |

From salt digging to olive pressing.This
technique is widely shown and described inside the Municipal
Trapetum Museum Maratea in Vico del Gargano. This museum is
in an ancient oil mill and there are some interesting dispaly
panels, some millstones and some ancient wood presses. |

GROTTAGLIE
Our itinerary around the museums of Puglia, of course,
could not avoid Grottaglie, the pottery capital where
there is the Didactic Pottery and Majolica Museum. It
is settled inside the famous School of Arts and there is
an exhibition of hundreds of handmade articles, dated back
since Medieval times up to today, such as : amphoras,
plates, vases and sacred icons. |
