Discoveryng The Castles Of Puglia

MARUGGIO

Once left Pulsano, our visit to the castles of Puglia takes us to Maruggio for a quick stop. This is an important town by the sea in the province of Taranto with a stately feudal castle. It has wide walls and three towers and was built by the Baly, commendatories of the Malta Order, in the XIV century. Later it was revised in the XVII century and it was further transformed in the following years.

SAVA

From Maruggio we go to Sava, a town famous for its wine. The town origins probably date back to the XIV century. There was a first group of houses called “Castles” and now, in the countryside, there still is a place with this name. Sava hamlet was born after the destruction of Pasano and Aliano hamlets and of S.Maria di Bagnolo abbey. The origins of the name Sava have different theories.Someone asserts that it comes from the name of a napolitan family, the Savas, who owned many masserie and feuds in different territories of Puglia and Campania. The castle, that since the end of the XIX cent.

UIs the seat of the Town Hall, was built around half of the XVI cent. by the Prato family. It was built in place of a masseria and it looked like a dwelling, more than a fortalice. Before it was surrounded by a little enclosure with a moat, there were no towers or rock . For a certain period of time, when the Jesuits were feudatories of Sava, it was a convent, before becoming the Municipal Hall.

GROTTAGLIE

About 27 km far from Sava, driving along the num. 7 highway for nearly 22 minutes, we get to Grottaglie, the pottery capital. Its name origins come from the many caves and gullies of this territory. In ancient times they were dug in the stone by Rudiae inhabitants, to make a shelter for themselves after the Gotes and the Saracens invasions. From this rupestrian site the town of Grottaglie origined.

Its gullies, that spread to the Murge of Martina, have different sizes and aspects. The most interesting from an historic-archaeologic study are : Lonoce, Coluccio, Caprarica, Buccito, Vicentino and of the Grotte; but the most charming and suggestive are definitely: Riggio, Fantiano, Fullonese and Lama dei Pensieri. Before visiting the peculiar pottery area, you should visit the stately Episcopio Castle, that during Feudal times, was the emblem of the power of the church (at that time there were many struggles between the bishops and the owners of the land ). This construction was built in the XIV cent., over a site fortified in the XIII cent., and it was revised many times until the XVIII cent. There are two towers, both embattled; the floor was dug in the tuff and there also is a garden of the XVI cent.
