SPELEO-ARCHAEOLOGIC CONDITIONS OF MARTINA TERRITORY
When we speleologists get into a cave, we immediately notice
with sorrow if it was
ransacked by its sediments, if it was spoiled by varnish
writings or if it was filled with debrises or rubbish. |

In some caves that also have an archaeologic interest, the sight
of those devastating “examples” of illicit excavations is even
worse because they destroy for ever millions of years of human
and territorial culture.Over Martina Franca and the nearby
territories, the conditions of the speleologic estate is
definitely one of the most demoted of the Murgia area. Damages
were already harsh but, as time goes by, they increase and we
are worried about that. This is why we are in dispute with the
local administration, that is indifferent to our cry.
The situation was never good ,this is why speleology is usually
more involved in the safeguard of the territory than in the
search for popularity. Probably, this is what we are paying for
in Martina. We are worried and we begin to suspect because at
the moment there are many people that have nothing to do with
caves which are getting very interested in them. We are growing
suspicious that local administrators, after being deaf to our
uninterrupted warnings, are now sponsorizing this project and
aim to a touristic exploitation of the territory.
We are growing suspicious that none of those project was
examined by a technical- scientific committee and, moreover, we
are growing suspicious that they want to keep the GSM group away
from it.
The GSM group has studied Martina speleology since 1974.
This is the same group that advertised this estate, providing
the keys to a right knowledge of it.We make this with passion,
care and for free and we always are at a disposal for school and
spare time operators.
Now we are begging you to consider our observations and the
authority of speleologic organizations, such as the Speleologic
Federation of Puglia and the Italian Speleologic Society. This
is to ensure the right conservation and development to the caves.
If you consider that the speleo-archaeologic estate is made of
about a hundred known cavities and that we update their
deterioration day by day, then we think that it should be useful
today, following their registration order, describing the
condition of the most “mistreated” ones.
