THE CARNIVAL

During the Carnival period, in the past, people used to entertain cheerfully themselves with music and folk dances, such as pizzica-pizzica or tarantella. Those events were based on dancings and comical games, together with a glass of wine. According to the tradition, the Carnival calendar of events was organized from thursday to thursday. There is the monks thrusday, the priests one, the widows one, the cuckolds or married ones and, in the end, the singles one, that is also said the mads one. Shrove Tuesday was the last day of Carnival and people used to spend this day in the streets, attending plays acted by extempored actors. At night, there used to be the Carnival funeral, represented by a puppet called mammòce de Carnièle.
It had a funny and ordinary shape, it was made of straw and it wore old dirty clothes belonging to the farmers. It lay over a wood board and it went in procession held by four people carrying torches. Someone pretending to be a doctor tried to resuscitate it, even operating it. Unfortunately it was always too late, its fate had already been decided..
