The Carmine church is a wonderful holy
building, whose origins belongs to the XVIII century, and it is
outside the town walls.
It was built between 1727 and 1758 in a smart baroque style. In
this church there is a valuable polychrome statue that was
before in an ancient building named after S.Maria delle
Misericordia and assumed to Stefano da Putignano. |

The main façade is extremely valuable, with
peculiar niches and the portal with the tympanum broken. The
side façade, instead, is in ashlar- work and there is a stately
bell tower. The octagonal dome is artistically very intersting.
Inside, along it, there are decorative bas-relieves made of
diminishing octagons that give a particular optical illusion.
The high altar is also valuable. On this altar you can see a big
painting of the Madonna del Carmine among the Saints (1760-65),
realized by the painter De Mauro, and a precious wood crucifix
of the XVI century, assumed to Vespiano Genoini.
The peculiar cloister of the XVI cent. is also to notice. In
spite of all the readaptations made, in fact, it has a beautiful
quadrangular colonnade with arches. |
