MUNICIPAL LIBRARY “ISIDORO CHIRULLI” |
|
Martina Franca municipal library was
constituted on the 17th of july 1928 with the legislative
measure numb.40 by the Prefectorial Commissary, Dott. Ferdinando
Abbate. The library was called “Civica” (Municipal) and was
settled in the old church of Santa Pace.
Many books were bought, others were donated by some people, and all of
them were classified and placed at community disposal. |

Because of the Administrators carelessness
and of the clerks indifference, this institution was left apart,
and then closed. |
|
All the bibliographic legacy and the
furnishings were first moved to the “Dopolavoro” (After work),
and then to the ENAL.
In 1947 the library was rebuilt, after the resolution numb.190 dated
october, 30,1947 and the task of its organization was entrusted
to Prof. Giovanni Caramia, who was very active and he involved
in this work also private bodies and publishing houses. |

The town council, with the resolution numb.18
dated january,19,1949, named the library after “ISIDORO CHIRULLI”,
as an acknoledgement to a man, the Archibishop Isidoro Chirulli,
of great cultural value, who was a big local historicist and who
edited “Franca Martina”, a work made of three volumes concerning
the origins of the town.
The new seat of the library was the grand hall of the Ducal Palace, that
the dukes used as a popular theatre. At the present time, in the
library there are about 24.000 books and two precious archives,
“Grassi” and “Caracciolo De’ Sangro”.
