Martina is not a peculiar town just because
of its wonderful old town centre, but also because of the famous
“trulli”, in the lovely contryside. They are houses where the
peasants used to live, but now they represent one of the best
attractions of Puglia. Many italian and foreigner visitors and
tourists, in fact, wish to spend a nice holiday in a trulli farm
or “bed & breakfast”. |

To let you know something more:
The Trulli are completely built with the “a secco” (dry-stone)
technique . On their outside walls, with a circular or squared
plan, rise the cones. The elements of the inside structure, with
circles laid one on top of the other, decrease their radius to
the top, where there is a stone that completes the “cannela” .
Outside, there are stones called “chiancole”, that let the rain
slide down.
The “pinnacolo” (pinnacle) is the decorative element of
“trulli”. It can have different shapes and it is placed on top
of the cone, to slender and make the building smarter. Inside,
there usually is the “tavolato”, a wood shelf placed under the
roof, so that the room in the cone can be used as a store or a
bedroom. The fireplace is also very important, it was used both
as a kitchen and a heat source.
