HOLY WEEK

After Palm Sunday and the blessing of olive branches, symbol of peace, the Holy Week starts for all the churches in Martina Franca. On Holy Thursday bells are kept silent and in every church sephulcres are set. They are Deposition altars, orned with flowers and candles.
Churches are opened until late night, to allow faithful people to visit all of them. On Holy Friday the Mysteries procession takes place. It was established in 1716. It starts from San Francesco d’Assisi church late in the afternoon and it ends at midnight, after passing by the main streets in town. All the congregations of town take part to this procession, wearing their characteristic dresses, orned with embroideries and with their own banner.

They hold the Mystery Cross, with all the symbols of the Passion, and some statues of Biblical episodes, like: Christ in the Garden; the Hecce Home; the Fall; Christ dead and the Holy Virgin of Sorrows. The wood and paper-pulp statues are hold on the shoulder by the components of the congregations.

During the procession, many people stand on both sides of the streets, and they stir up emotions of pity and faith.
